The sea front of Fairbourne, which has one of the longest Second World War coastal defences in the UK. Built in 1940, the defences run for 1.5 miles. There were once five Type 24 bulletproof pillboxes; over 650 concrete tank obstacles or “Dragon’s Teeth”; and barbed wire supported on wooden posts set into the beach. The defences were manned by the Merionethshire Home Guard.
